Timeline: How a Navy Quarter Zip Became the Internet’s Most Argued-About Sweater

The Epstein quarter zip did not go viral once. It went viral in stages, each one pushed by a news story, a document release or a seller. This is the complete timeline, with a link to the reporting behind every entry, from the 2005 photograph to the 2026 replica market.

2005: the photograph

18 May 2005. Jeffrey Epstein attends the Radar Magazine launch party at the Hotel QT, New York. Neil Rasmus photographs him for Patrick McMullan in a navy Sports Authority quarter-zip with red JEE embroidery and a US flag patch. The image goes to Getty. Source: Know Your Meme.

2019 to 2024: the crop

As the Epstein case, his 2019 death and the first document releases dominate coverage, the Radar photo becomes one of the most-used images of him. True-crime accounts crop it down to the sweater; the JEE monogram makes the crop instantly recognisable. Source: Film Daily. Our explainer on the letters: What does JEE mean?

September 2025: the real one is sold

2 September. Miami showroom @restricted.lifestyle lists the sweater as "1of1 worn". 4 September. Complex's Instagram reports the $11,000 price. The Miami New Times calls it "downright disturbing"; AlterNet syndicates the story. 20 September. The New Times confirms the sale for $11,000 after 5,000 DMs and a declined $100,000 offer. Full story: The original sold for $11,000.

November 2025: quarter zips become a trend on their own

21 November. Complex and Newsweek cover the Gen Z "quarter-zip movement" started by Jason Gyamfi, whose TikTok passes 23 million views. Complex reports a 25 percent sales rise in quarter zips among 18 to 24 year olds. 26 November. ABC7 interviews the founders. The garment category is suddenly everywhere, which primes the next stage.

January to February 2026: the files, the memes, the copies

Early 2026. New Epstein file releases put the photo back in every feed. Moneycontrol reports that the jacket "goes viral" and that lookalikes are up for sale. 31 January. Nick Fuentes launches a $69.99 "U.S.A." version; by 1 February he claims 1,000 sold. Coverage: Daily Dot, UNILAD Tech (9 Feb), Distractify (12 Feb). 3 to 4 February. Roblox players build Epstein cosplay outfits from custom items; posts pass 30,000 likes and creators complain. 4 February. The Observer publishes Lily Isaacs' "Epstein has become a meme, not a monster", describing AI clips of Epstein "dancing in the snow, dressed in a navy blue, quarter-zip sweater". 10 February. Stylist asks whether the memes are harming women and girls. 14 February. Vanity Fair publishes Dan Adler's feature "Jeffrey Epstein's Quarter Zip and the Rise of a Fringe Fashion Obsession", the first national magazine treatment, which names epsteinquarterzip.com at $49.00 as one of three places to buy one. Know Your Meme logs the entry the same month.

March 2026: platforms pull listings

5 March. The French collective Mouv'Enfants denounces the sale of JEE sweaters; eBay and Vinted remove listings. FashionUnited / AFP. Etsy keeps its listings live.

September 2026: the replica market gets mapped

1 September. Film Daily's Simone Barbon publishes the most complete account of why the sweater spreads, and maps the sellers: Etsy at ten to forty-five dollars, Fuentes at $69.99, and "a dedicated site, epsteinquarterzip.com" at forty-nine to fifty-five dollars. That is this store. Our comparison of the options is in Zara, AliExpress, Temu and Etsy compared, and the product itself is here.

What comes next

Every document release restarts the cycle, and the quarter zip trend that Complex and Newsweek documented is still running. We update this page when there is new reporting. If you have written about the sweater and are not listed, email us and we will add you; the full press list lives on our In the news page.
