What Is the Epstein Quarter Zip? Origin, the 2005 Photo and Why It Went Viral
Share
If you have opened TikTok, X or Instagram at any point in 2026 you have seen it: a navy blue quarter-zip sweatshirt with a red diamond monogram on the chest and a small American flag on the sleeve. It shows up in reaction images, AI-generated dance clips, Roblox avatars and, increasingly, in search bars. This guide explains where the Epstein quarter zip comes from, what the monogram means, why the internet cannot stop talking about it, and what you are actually buying if you order one.
The photo that started it
The sweater comes from a single press photograph. On 18 May 2005 Jeffrey Epstein attended the launch party for Radar Magazine at the Hotel QT in New York City. Photographer Neil Rasmus, working for Patrick McMullan, shot him in a navy quarter-zip with the initials "J.E.E." embroidered on the left chest and a United States flag patch on the left sleeve. The image was uploaded to Getty Images and sat there, mostly ignored, for almost twenty years.
According to the Know Your Meme entry, the photograph became one of the most-used images of Epstein online as coverage of the Epstein files intensified through the 2020s. True-crime archivists cropped the sweater out of the wider shot every time new documents were unsealed, and the cropped garment turned into a visual shorthand that worked without any caption.
What the sweater actually is
The base garment is not a designer piece. Reporting by Film Daily and AlterNet identifies it as a discontinued Sports Authority fleece, a mid-2000s sporting-goods store pullover. Three details make it recognisable:
- The monogram. "JEE" for Jeffrey Edward Epstein, stitched in red thread in a diamond layout. It is a personal monogram, not a brand logo. We cover the lettering in detail in What does JEE mean?
- The flag patch. A small embroidered US flag on the upper left sleeve.
- The colour. Dark navy with a contrasting zipper. A white version appears in later records, which is why our white Agartha edition exists.
Epstein was photographed in monogrammed quarter-zips repeatedly over the years, so the navy one is not unique, but the Radar party shot is the one everyone knows.
Why it went viral in 2026
Three things happened in quick succession.
- The real sweater was sold. In September 2025 a Miami vintage showroom listed what it claimed was the actual sweater from the photo. The Miami New Times later confirmed it sold for $11,000. Full story in our write-up of the Miami sale.
- The document releases. Each new batch of Epstein files put the photograph back in every feed. The Observer's Lily Isaacs described AI-generated clips of Epstein "dancing in the snow" in the navy quarter-zip as the defining meme format of the moment, in a piece titled "Epstein has become a meme, not a monster".
- Copycats and controversy. On 31 January 2026 political streamer Nick Fuentes started selling a version with "U.S.A." in place of the initials, and by early February the Daily Dot reported he was calling it "rage bait" and claiming a thousand units sold. Days later Roblox players began recreating the outfit with custom items. Know Your Meme logged the entry that month.
We put the whole sequence on one page in the Epstein quarter zip timeline.
Searches, replicas and where this store fits
In February 2026 Vanity Fair ran a full feature on the sweater, "Jeffrey Epstein's Quarter Zip and the Rise of a Fringe Fashion Obsession", and listed the places you could buy one: Etsy sellers, Nick Fuentes' store at $69.99, "or epsteinquarterzip.com ($49.00)". By then people were typing "Epstein quarter zip" into Google, Etsy, eBay and AliExpress. Film Daily's September 2026 report on the replica market lists Etsy listings at ten to forty-five dollars, Fuentes' store at $69.99, and "a dedicated site, epsteinquarterzip.com" selling versions for forty-nine to fifty-five dollars. That dedicated site is us.
We are not a marketplace seller with a printed logo. Our quarter zip is cut 1:1 to the photograph: dark navy, in 100% cotton or one of two cotton-polyester blends, with an embossed red JEE embroidery, a stitched flag patch and a gold zipper. Sizes run XS to XXL. You can see every detail on the product page, and the differences between ours and the marketplace versions are laid out in Zara, AliExpress, Temu and Etsy compared.
A note on what this is and is not
Epsteinquarterzip® is an independent apparel brand. Our product is a newly made garment inspired by a photograph. It is not vintage, it is not the sweater sold in Miami, and it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or official merchandise of Jeffrey Epstein, his estate, or any related organisation. People buy it for the same reason they share the image: it has become a piece of internet culture. We think the honest way to sell it is to explain exactly what it is, which is what this blog is for.
